Welcome to Pusan National University
Department of Polymer Science and Engineering
The research and teaching of the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering cover the essential elements of polymer science and technology. A student is not only trained to be a competent engineer with a sound background in polymers, but also guided to be a responsible engineer in every aspect. This is a distinct characteristic of our Department, which makes the department different from other ones of the engineering college, whose objective lies mainly in bringing up capable engineers. The Department of Polymer Science and Chemical Engineering runs M.S. and Ph.D. programs in two major areas: "Polymer Science and Engineering Major" and "Chemical Engineering Major".
The Department of Polymer Science and Engineering is a field that is gaining a great deal of attention these days, as it deals with the research and utilization of state-of-the-art industries that are closely related to our everyday lives. Studies in this area are closely related to nano-technology and bio-technology, which are key technologies that will shape our future.
Students in this field learn about strong and light materials used in spaceships and airplanes that can endure high temperatures, engineering plastics that can replace metal parts in automobiles, high-elasticity elastomers (elastic + polymer), polymer batteries, organic light-emitting-diodes (OLED), photovoltaic cells, and other functional optic/electronic materials, medical materials that can replace the heart or damaged organs in humans, sustained release medicine that is safe for use in the human body, and many other special polymer materials. There is great potential for the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering to develop into a key major in the development of nano science and technology, an area which the Korean government has designated as a core technology for the 21st century.
With the abilities developed through theoretical and lab-based training, students who graduate from the undergraduate and graduate programs can find jobs in chemical and materials departments at big major companies, including Samsung, LG, Hyundai, SK, Hanhwa, Kolon, and numerous other prominent domestic as well as international chemical companies. Recently, the doors have been opened wider to graduates in the field of electric and electronic materials at Samsung SDI, LG-Philips LCD, etc. Furthermore, the percentage of our graduates who continue their studies at renowned graduate schools, in Korea and abroad, is increasing every year.
